$22,794 - The average annual cost per inmate in an Arizona state prison.

Although Americans today are living during a period of dropping crime rates, incarceration rates and the average cost per inmate have been on the rise. Arizona’s incarceration rate (not including federal inmates or jail inmates) has risen from 515 inmates per 100,000 residents in 2000 to 599 inmates per 100,000 residents in late 2009. This is several thousand prisoners over its "rated" bed capacity of 35,987, which counts beds that were designed to be occupied by inmates and does not include temporary beds. Additionally, the average annual cost per inmate for most Arizona prisoners reached $22,794 in 2007.

Announcements
Arizona Indicators is pleased to present interactive maps for Arizona’s Instrument to Measure Standards (AIMS), Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP), AZ LEARNS, high school dropout rates, and high school graduation rates. This interactive mapping tool visualizes data that was previously only available in tabular formats, allowing you to seamlessly move from county level aggregates to data for specific neighborhoods or schools. Whether you are a researcher, parent, educator, or community leader, this format can reveal interesting geographic clusters or trends at your level of interest.
Read about how Arizona’s criminal justice system is organized, financed, and administered in a new Arizona Indicators briefing series, Indicator Insight. Each issue of Indicator Insight defines key terms, establishes historical context, and highlights major policy issues in one of our main content areas. Read the series debut to learn about trends in crime rates, juvenile arrests, and recidivism.
