Welcome to the first edition of Arizona Indicators’ monthly newsletter. We appreciate this opportunity to keep you informed about important data updates, publications, and events.

Featured Number

1,327,201 - The number of Arizona residents enrolled in AHCCCS programs as of September 1, 2009.

This is an increase of 195,708 (or 17.3%) over a year ago and a 22.9% increase since the beginning of the economic downturn in December 2007. Clearly, Arizonans’ use of social safety net services, like healthcare, increases during times of financial insecurity.

Announcements

Transportation

Arizona Indicators has launched a Transportation tab which presents sustainable transportation indicators, ranging from travel time to bus ridership, and economic transportation indicators such as international flights and truck containers crossing the Arizona-Mexico border.

Families

The Families tab is expanding to include indicators on aging adults and people with disabilities. Check back in November for the publication of aging indicators including data on nursing home facilities, Alzheimer’s disease, employment, and grandparents raising grandchildren.

Recent Updates

Updated data are now available in Economy, Innovation, and Human Services. Check out the latest unemployment figures, venture capital investments, and median property sales prices among others.

AZ Views

New data from the statewide Arizona Indicators Panel show Arizonans are on edge about jobs and quality of life. Highlights include:

  • 16% of panelists reported feeling “very secure” in their jobs compared to 47% a year ago
  • 42% reported that the quality of life in their area has declined in the last few years
  • Only 5% of panelists said they were following news about the Arizona State budget very closely
  • Among those following the news very closely or fairly closely (48% of panelists) 80% disapprove of the way the Arizona Legislature is dealing with revenue and expenditures
