Education
Primary Education
The earliest stages of childhood educational development are incredibly valuable to the overall health of a community, as each child’s learning of fundamentals will set a course through the remainder of compulsory education, and beyond. Achievement test scores are important measures of students’ skills in these subject areas, as well as good indicators of overall achievement in school. To assess student progress in mathematics, science, writing, and reading, the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) measures national trends in the academic performance of students in grades 4, 8, & 12. Here at Arizona’s Education Indicators, under the page titled, “Elementary School Test Scores”, we have presented the Arizona NAEP results for 4th & 8th grade students, in comparison with the national NAEP results for 4th & 8th grade students.
Score results are also presented for the SAT9, a standardized test of Reading and Math, as well as its more widely used counterpart, TerraNova. Arizona’s Instrument to Measure Standards (AIMS) results, which provides a gauge for depth of learning in math, reading, and writing, are available here too. In combination with those student performance results, AZLearns, a statewide school performance measure, which is based on AIMS/SAT9 results, is displayed accounting for the percent of districts that are considered “Performing” and the percent of districts considered “Underperforming.”
