High School Dropout Rates
Description: Dropout rates refer to the proportion of students who drop out of school during a twelve-month reporting period. The dropout rate is the number of students who dropped out divided by the number of students who were enrolled during the school year multiplied by 100. The high school dropout rate is calculated from those in grades 7 through 12 who drop out during a single year.
Calculating dropout rates is complicated by tracking individual students over time. Two-thirds of those labeled “dropouts” are actually in the “status unknown” category. For example, a student who moves to another state without notifying his Arizona school is shown as a dropout.
