Secondary Education
The extent and content of students’ knowledge, as well as their ability to think, learn, and communicate, affect their likelihood to be productive and active citizens as adults. This section presents key indicators of how well children are learning and progressing through secondary school.
High school completion rates, university entrance exam scores, and a table on Post-Secondary Readiness all indicate the extent to which students have attained a basic education and are prepared for higher levels of education or the workforce. The results and proportion of students taking AP exams offers a benchmark for students’ desire to excel above and beyond the standard expectations. Figures on dropout rates for Arizona as a whole, and the Greater Phoenix Region (GPR) along with school district-level summaries of academic progress provide some context as to how the schools themselves are performing, according to their ability to retain students, and the “Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP)” standards of No Child Left Behind (NCLB).
