Higher Unemployment Levels Lead to Increased AHCCCS Enrollment

As of January 1st 2010, there were 1,361,947 Arizona residents enrolled in AHCCCS programs. This is an increase of 210,058 (or 18.2%) over a year ago and a 26.1% increase since the beginning of the economic downturn in December 2007. However, January 2010 marks the first time in a year that the monthly percent change in total AHCCCS enrollment was negative (-0.4%). This could give us reason to be cautiously optimistic about slowing demand for social safety net services.
