Nonprofit Organizations
Arizona’s nonprofit sector is expanding along with its population. For example, in 1996, Arizona counted 1,057 nonprofit organizations registered with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and 5,082 filed a “990” form. The 990 is the primary reporting mechanism for charitable organizations. Not all organizations must file, such as those with less than $25,000 in gross receipts. However it is currently the major source for tracking revenue, assets, and status. The Arizona Corporation Commission counts many more nonprofit organizations. For purposes of gauging current services to the community and actual impact, these figures are of the greatest value.
In 2006, 18,710 nonprofits in Arizona were registered with the IRS and 7,494 of those filed a 990 form.
In 1996, Arizona nonprofits and foundations raised more than $8 billion in revenue and over $11.7 billion in assets. By 2006, that number had risen to more than $17 billion in revenue and more than $27 billion in assets.
NTEE Codes are drawn from the National Taxonomy of Exempt Entities. The Urban Institute’s National Center for Charitable Statistics is one of the primary national comparable sources of information on nonprofit organizations, finances, and services. This data will be updated as new data becomes available.
