The heat index is important because, when heat and humidity combine to reduce the amount of evaporation of sweat from the body, outdoor exercise becomes dangerous even for those in good shape.
The Heat Index (HI), also known as the "apparent temperature" is an accurate measure of how hot it really feels when the relative humidity (RH) is added to the actual air temperature. It is a measure of human discomfort due to combined heat and humidity.
Heat index data were collected from the Arizona State Climate Office, http://geography.asu.edu/azclimate. Temperatures and humidity were recorded at the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport climate monitoring station.
NOTE: There were several hours with missing data in June 2009, especially in the second half of the month.

An increase in the heat index is especially notable during the nighttime hours. Elevated nighttime temperatures, an effect of the urban heat island, along with humidity which tends to be highest during predawn hours, result in a high heat index during the 9 pm to 4 am time period.
